Knowing whether or not you qualify for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) when you own your own business can get confusing. The answer to whether or not you can get these benefits is, it depends.
Before determining if you qualify for SSDI or not, it is important to understand the idea of substantial gainful activity (SGA). This is an amount based on how much work you put into your business. If you reach a certain amount, you no longer qualify for SSDI. This amount changes each year. However, if you don’t meet this amount, then yes, you would be entitled to SSDI.
If your business does meet the SGA amount, there is another way in which you can qualify. If you can prove that you don’t provide any substantial services to your business then you may also qualify. An example of this would be if there are multiple owners of your business and you aren’t as active of an owner compared to the others. However, if you provide over 45 hours a month of some form of management services, you would not be eligible.
There are also three tests that the Social Security Administration uses to determine if you are eligible for SSDI. Those three tests include a compatibility test, a worth of work test, and a significant services and substantial income test.
