The Land of the Crabapples

The name Cheektowaga comes from Chictawauga, the name given to this area by the Seneca people, Native Americans who settled the land to control the fur trade. It means “land of the crabapples.”

Originally a rural area, Cheektowaga became very suburban following World War II. For years, the Westinghouse Electric Corporation plant located on Genesee Street was the primary employer. While the economy has diversified since then, even today, Cheektowaga’s population remains very blue-collar. 

The town is also home to the Walden Galleria, the largest mall in the Buffalo-Niagara region.
